The Foundation is excited about the expansion of the North Dakota Heritage Center. More than 100,000 people visit the Heritage Center each year and comment on the high quality exhibits and programs. Nestled on the State Capitol grounds, the state's largest accredited museum weaves the story of North Dakota from the ancient dinosaurs to the "Great Depression." But North Dakota’s story does not end in the Dirty Thirties. There's wind energy, the discovery of oil, the great coal industry, exploding agricultural opportunities with renewable energy, world class manufacturing companies, the bread basket of the world, all stories to inspire our children and our visitors. We also want to expand the stories of our native ancestors and highlight the growing heritage tourism attractions all across the state. Our goal is to become "the Smithsonian of the Plains" a "must see" regional attraction.
The North Dakota Heritage Center is in the center of the state and North Dakota all in one center. Travelers from the east or the west can experience the sights and sounds from throughout the state, before they head out to the badlands, or the Pembina Gorge or the Red River Valley. This "hub of history" will showcase to visitors the best North Dakota has to offer.
The Phase II expansion will be a partnership with the state, federal and private funding. The total cost of the project is approximately $52 million. Private and federal sources will raise $12 million over the next 5 to 7 years to help make it a reality.
Give a gift now to the SHSND Foundation to help support the Phase II expansion of the North Dakota Heritage Center.
